Information Superhighway or Criminal Hotspot: How Criminals Benefit from Technological Advancements The internet has been around for decades but has undoubtedly become the backbone for society’s communications and informational dependency. The history of the internet is commonly misunderstood. Most people believe that the internet began in the mid-1980s, when in fact the development of the internet, by a team of experts started in 1957 when the first satellite, Sputnik, was launched by the Soviet Union. (Davis) The development and success of Sputnik led to ARPANET (a precursor for the internet), which ultimately led to the National Science Foundation taking over management of the internet in 1990, and in 1992 internet access was available for the public to utilize. (Korsell) The underpinnings of the Internet are formed by the global interconnection of hundreds of thousands of otherwise independent computers, communications entities and information systems. What makes this interconnection possible is the use of a set of communication standards, procedures and formats in common among the networks and the various devices and computational facilities connected to them. The procedures by which computers communicate with each other are called "protocols." While this infrastructure is steadily evolving to include new capabilities, the protocols initially used by the Internet are called the "TCP/IP" protocols, named after the two protocols that formed the principal basis for Internet operation. (K. C. Claffy) The development and open accessibility of the internet, people came to enjoy the benefits but quickly began to realize the detrimental effects and harm that could arise from “open-communications”. (Glassman) With recent advancements in technology, it is possible for one to earn and education, earn a decent income, go shopping, do personal banking, stay in contact with long lost relatives and friends, and basically have endless opportunities to learn about every possible topic that may ever come to mind. With the never-ending growth of input placed in cyber-space it is even possible to take a vacation without ever having to get up off of your couch. Simply put, society loves leisure, and the internet surely offers that. Regardless of the many benefits that the internet provides, it has raised and continues to raise many controversial debates as to whether the benefits outweigh the potential risks. Some of the potential risks of the internet include but are nowhere limited to; possible addiction, scams,
