SYSEN 510: Applied Systems Engineering Fall 2011 Homework #1 i.Systems Thinking Imagine a small library using a card catalog system in the days before computers. Essential components of this library would include the archived material, the catalogs, and the shelves. You can expand the system (adding more components) as needed to fully answer the questions in this homework. In particular, you will find it difficult to describe the process of checking out a book if you do not include the user (the library member) and the checkout card (located in a pocket attached to the archived material) as components of the system. Hand-drawn diagrams are acceptable but for career development you should become competent with a drawing program. Microsoft Visio is recommended but images created with Microsoft Powerpoint, Word, and other similar software are acceptable. a) (2 points) Draw an entity-relationship diagram of the library to capture the list of components of the system and how they interrelate or interact.
