Chapter 1 Left of a from before(missed it, read it from the texts) Notes from professor - Genus made up of closely related groups of species. - Species- no particular definition of species. Taxonomic levels – most common Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species The family of animals all end in “ide”. More and more animals as you move up taxonomic levels. Kingdoms First proposed two, plants and animals. 1960s a 5-kingdom system was built. Monera (includes prokaryotes, all of them) Protist (unicellular eukaryotes) Plants Fungi Animal Origin of Phylogenic tree of life Studied a gene that codes for ribosomal rna. Domain Life can be divided into 3 domains instead of 5 kingdoms. At the bottom there is a node (dotted line), then there is terminal internodes and internal internodes (no living thing at the end of it) So start at the node at the bottom, from that species of the node arose and led to another ancestor. Plants, fungi and animal are small tips on the end.
