1.0 Description of workforce diversity It is generally accepted that Diversity means dissimilarities—differences—among people due to age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background and capabilities or disabilities ( Contemporary Management 2007 ). And from this, we can see workforce diversity is the combination of those in the workplace. Workforce diversity is a principle issue for most companies. In today’s world, organizations must realize, understand and manage it with high efficiency. It is a complicated issue to handle, but with current reforms in the world market, workforce diversity can be of great value to an organization’s success. Some people think that managing workforce diversity will surely to bring about success to an organization. Others may not think so, and they think diversity will lead to conflicts and lack of cooperation (Game Developer Demographics: An Exploration of Workforce Diversity 2005). Increasing workforce diversity is a developing trend of the society. It’s good to staff and also to employers. When we first come to workforce diversity, we will consider age, gender, personality, culture, and so on. It may include language, race, nationality or something else ( Rosado 2006 ). 1.2 Approaches to managing workforce diversity There are several ways for managers to take effective measures to achieve the diversity in workplace. First of all, the managers should increase the awareness about diversity. They should have the ability to appreciate diversity. However, this requires people to become
