Additional Activities Chapter 40 Activity: Overview of Animal Tissues Groups of cells with a common structure and function are called tissues. Tissues are groups into four major categories: epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue. Activity: Epithelial Tissue Epithelial tissues are tightly joined, closely packed cells. Epithelial tissue cover the outside of the body, line organs, line and cavities. Epithelial tissues are grouped by their cell shape and number of cell layers. Location on Animal Name Function Location Top Left Stratified squamous epithelium Protective barrier Skin, esophagus line Top Right Simple squamous epithelium Exchange by diffusion Blood vessels, lung lining Bottom Left Simple cubiodal epithelium Secretion Kidney tubules Bottom Right Simple columnar epithelium Nutrient absorption Intestines Activity: Connective Tissue Connective tissues are widely scattered found in the framework of the body and they bind and support other tissues. Connective tissue cells are embedded in an extracellular matrix which is secreted by the cells. Connective tissues include: bone, cartilage, and blood.
