5) 39.2 (791-799, 806-810) A. Describe the evidence for plant hormones through the Darwin and Darwin, Boysen Jenson, and Went experiments. B. Briefly summarize the functions of the plant hormones: auxins cytokinins brassinosteroids gibberellins abciscic acid ethylene. C. Discuss hormonal control of plant tropisms , turgor movements and flowering. A) Darwin and Darwin -Proved that coleoptile is responsible for phototropism -Grass bends toward light only if coleoptile is present -Will not bend if opaque guard is on top -Will not bend if coleoptile tip is cut off -Will bend with transparent top -Will bend with shield in the middle of the plant. Boysen Jenson -Separated tip from rest of coleoptile -gelatin: allows chemicals to pass through cells -Plant bent toward light -Mica: impermeable to chemicals -No response whatsoever. -Proved that signal is a mobile chemical Went -Put coleoptile in agar. -Said chemicals in coleoptile will diffuse into the agar, and so the agar will have the chemicals and can act as a substitute. -Placed block of agar substitute on grass [in dark] where coleoptile should be.
