Product robustness | Ford Motor Co. safety engineers were working with a supplier to better understand the performance of rear seat belts. In any conventional seat belt system with lap and should belts, if the lap portion of the belt rides upward, the passenger may slide beneath it, potentially resulting an abdominal injury.

Product robustness | This phenomenon, called “submarining” is related to a large number of factors, including the nature of the collision, the design of vehicle, the property of seats and belts, the passenger’s physical condition etc. | Based on the experiments, simulation, and analysis, Ford engineers wish to determine which of the many factors are most critical to passenger safety and to avoid submarining.

Product robustness | So the purpose of this lecture is to present a method for designing and conducting experiments to identify the critical\leading factors of a phenomenon, to improve the performance of products even in the presence of uncontrollable variations ( noises ) and to reduce the number of experiments needed . | This method is generally called Robust Design .

Product robustness | A product is said to be robust if … z Performs consistently as intended z Throughout the life cycle z Under a wide range of user conditions z Under a wide range of external influences When it is insensitive to the effects of sources of variability.

Product robustness | From another point of view, robust design is the product development activity of improving the desired performance of the product while minimizing the effects of noise. | In robust design, we use experiments and data analysis to identify robust setpoints for the design parameter we can control. | A robust setpoint is a combination of design parameter values for which the product performance is as desired under a range of operating conditions and manufacturing variations.

Product robustness | Robust design exploits nonlinear relationships to identify setpoints where the product performance is less sensitive to variations.
