Essay Outline Intro Thesis: Since 1864, military strategy can be characterized by a shift in emphasis from total war to specialized warfare because of changes in technology and its ramifications. Indian Wars Strategy in the Indian Wars, as evident by the campaigns in the Plains, was characterized by utilizing the Army as a police force, rather than as a military. This shift in the type of duties made the army ineffective as a true combat unit. Transportation limited the range of operations. Because of the nature of transportation, more resources were necessary to move troops that in subsequent wars which were much less resource-intensive. Spanish-American War Because of the scattered nature of the campaigns against the Indians, the Army was incredibly unprepared for the amphibious nature of the war against the Spanish in Cuba. Even with many mistakes made the Army, the scale of the war against the even more ill-prepared Spanish forces heavily favored the Americans who held the advantage in weapons among other factors.
