Enzyme Function Organic Catalysts speed up the rate of a reaction, but are not used during the reaction Specific There is a specific enzyme for each reaction Enzyme Activity Enzyme + Substrate (Reactants) ---> Enzyme-Substrate complex ---> Enzyme-Product Complex Complex ----> Enzyme + Product Induced Fit Model The substrate binds to the active site This alters the shape of the enzyme When the substrate binds into the enzyme it induces the fit Creating a fit that promotes the reactions Competitive Inhibition Inhibitor binds to the active site and blocks access to the active site competing for the active site, doesn t have to fill the whole active site ʼ Non-Competitive inhibition Inhibitor binds to a site other than the active site and alters the shape of the active site If i take my active site and i stick something else in there (Competitor), it changes the shape, and the substrate molecule cannot fit in there. Allosteric Inhibition
