Acoustical transduction: Conversion of sound waves into neural impulses in the hairs cells of the inner ear. Psychology 7e in Modules Hearing Sound waves: Length = frequency ; Determines pitch Height = amplitude; Determines loudness Psychology 7e in Modules Hearing Sound waves travel from the outer ear, to the middle ear, to the cochlea (fluid filled snail-shaped tube). Movement in the cochlea fluid disrupts receptor cells (hair cells) on the basilar membrane , which triggers nerve impulses that travel to the brain. Psychology 7e in Modules How do we perceive loudness Loudness —number of activated hair cells Pitch Place Theory —waves of different pitches trigger activity at different places on the basilar membrane Explains how we hear high-pitched sounds Frequency Theory —the rate of nerve impulses traveling up the auditory nerve matches the Psychology 7e in Modules Place Theory Psychology 7e in Modules Frequency Theory Psychology 7e in Modules...
