Cy Plan 120 Lecture 14 World Institute on Disability Background Overview - founded in 1983 by Ed Roberts, Joan Leon, and Judy Heumann - the disability movement was just beginning to gain recognition in the 70’s - Anita Erin was a graduate from the University of Tulsa where she was acknowledged as disabled person/ she moved to Berkeley which she felt would be a Utopia because it had been making efforts for the disabled movement/ she got to Berkeley was a little disappointed to know there were still challenges, but this also excited Anita because it meant there was still work to be done/ she worked at the Center for Independent Living - Ed Roberts used to be a student at UC Berkeley/ this was before college was an option for many disabled students/ the UC changed that/ the disabled had a right to be educated/ there was a problem though. What happened to the students once they graduated and the services in of the UC were not available outside - This is where Ed and Judy came in with the WID -
