Cy Plan 120 Lecture 15 Background - began career at UC Davis/ grad student in Chancellor’s office as apprentice - capital planning space management/ space capital – process university obtain $ for building improving infrastructure/ used to be state funding/ less so now/ more private funding - 1980 started surveying all buildings at UC Berkeley/ engineers were looking at heat ventilation/ life safety with little emphasis on seismic safety then/ ADA had not come around yet so there was not a focus on access/ when it became law there had to be quick change - In 1873 when South Hall was built there was not knowledge of faults/ 1908 quake, Lawson began to understand fault structure/ 1989 quake was another wake up call/ many buildings do not have the seismic standards of today because built so long ago/ buildings had to be reevaluated and many came out with poor ratings so they were put on a list of needed repairs - There were little focus projects such as fix 15 buildings’ elevators/ some
