ED 100 Lecture Internal Changes in the City - change of layout/ social organization within city Move to U.S. - Chicago School of Urban Design was as school of sociology. - In 1800, US only had four towns with more than 10,000 residents - 97% of pop still in country side rapid process of urbanization - 1830 Chicago had 50 people. By 1865 180,000 people - Number of problems showed up - 4 people per room with no sewer, no running water/ 2,500 died of Chlamydia/ 25,000 were unemployed - NY distribute bread to bring social peace again 10 years later rent riots because of mass evictions/ need fresh air and light - Development of land use started spreading through 1920 o Need for social peace or pacify certain residents/ German and Italian immigrants afraid of garment district/ reinforces spatial divisions/ rationalizing the city industry based on small enterprise/ a lot of entry and exit/ markets not established yet/ establishment of markets = more steady output and bigger runs/ planning and stability/ public and private
