Unformatted text preview: Power Up , an article from the online version of “the Economist” discusses a new energy source growing in popularity. Termed “power beaming” this new energy source utilizes the combination of laser beams and photovoltaic cells. Photovoltaic cells, containing photovoltaic material, are able to convert radiation from the sun into electrical current (Wikipedia). The laser beams, however, also emit “near- infra-red wavelengths” that are able to power photovoltaic cells. This new technology is being further researched and enhanced by many fields, including the US Department for Homeland Security and the US Army who can use laser beams to power remote robots and other devices. NASA has also encouraged the development of this power source. Representatives have discussed the use of laser beams to generate power for rovers on areas of the moon and Mars where sunlight cannot reach. The article also discusses the increasing efficiency of the lasers ability to convert electrical power into beam power. This efficiency the increasing efficiency of the lasers ability to convert electrical power into beam power....
