Running head: LES MISERABLES: VALJEAN VS. JAVERT 1 Les Miserables: Valjean vs. Javert Jean Valjean, a poor peasant who was working hard to support him and his sister, who was a widow, and who had seven children. When Winter came and work was scarce for Valjean, his family was left to starve. He broke a bakery window and stole a loaf of bread to feed his nephew. He was sentenced to nineteen years of prison life for stealing that loaf of bread. When Valjean was released, he exchanged words with Javert. Javert tells him that he needs to know the meaning of the law and abide by the law to live in society. Valjean was issued a “yellow passport”, this passport basically was designed to banish him from society. No one wanted him as everyone looked at him as a criminal. A woman sees him trying to find a place to stay and she suggests for him to go to the Catholic church around the corner. This is where he met bishop Monsieur Myriel who turns his life around by witnessing to him with love and grace and a whole lot of mercy. Valjean was saved from being imprisoned again for armed robbery against the priest, Monsieur Myriel claimed to the police that a mistake was made and Valjean was freed from imprisonment and saved from a death sentence. This is where Valjean met mercy and grace for the first time and the actions of the priest transformed Valjean's life forever. Javert was
