Literary Analysis Essay The Tragic Epitome of Oedipus the King Sophocles literature, “Oedipus the King”, is a story written about unfortunate tragedy. The theme of tragedy is staged throughout every scene of the text and it is inevitable Oedipus will die living his life as a tragic hero. The tragic events of Oedipus’ life prove his continued determination and dedication even when adversity follows him like his own shadow. From the moment Oedipus was born, misfortune ensued because of him being the son of King Laius. Some time before his birth, Oedipus’ destiny was a tragic revelation which was established by the gods. (Sophocles and Grene, 2010). Regardless of his life of calamity, Oedipus strives to break away from the predestined afflictions which depict his tragic heroism. Apollo reveals the prophecy that King Laius’ very own son will execute him. (Sophocles and Grene, 2010). After gaining knowledge of the event of his death, King Laius directs his wife Jocasta to kill their offspring. Jocasta and her servant could not bring themselves to murder the infant and instead ushered him to shepherd who put
