BROWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE Department of Natural Science - Chemistry CHM. 1045 General Chemistry Fall Semester, 2006-1 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is the first course in the two-lecture course sequence: CHM. 1045, and 1046. It introduces the student to the gas laws, properties of gases, liquids and solids, solutions and colloids, types of chemical reactions, reactions in aqueous solutions (acids, bases, and salts), and thermodynamics. The laboratory course of CHM 1045L is taken concurrently with CHM 1045. CHM 1045 covers units in: 1. Structure of Atoms, Molecules & Ions 2. Stoichiometry 3. Aqueous Reactions 4. Thermochemistry 5. Electronic Structure of Atoms 6. Periodic Properties of the Elements 7. Gases 8. Intermolecular Forces 9. Properties of Solutions 10. Acid Base Equilibrium 11. Chemistry of Non Metals Grading Policy : Throughout the course, you will be able to earn a total of 500 points: Problem sets+ quizzes + Attendance + class participation (10%) : You will be assigned problems for each topic covered in the lecture. Problem sets may be written or on-line assignments. On-line assignments may be accessed via http://www.mhhe.com/physsci/chemistry/chang/ Late or incomplete assignments will not be accepted. Your average score for all the problem sets and quizzes will count 10% of your final grade Exams 3 out of 4 (75%) : Four exams will be given throughout the course of the semester. Refer to the schedule for tentative test dates and coverage. Please note that MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL NOT BE GIVEN . To compensate for this regulation, the lowest test score will be dropped. IF YOU MISS AN EXAM, FOR WHATEVER REASON, IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY BECOME YOUR DROPPED SCORE. Final Exam (15%) : There will be a final, CUMULATIVE , exam at the end of the course on Monday, Dec 12, 2004 at 6:00pm-8:50pm Grading scale: 10% A = 90-100% B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69% F = below 59% An “I” will be given only if the final exam is missed due to documented, extreme circumstances. The instructor must be notified of such circumstances prior to the exam to arrange a time to complete the course requirements.
