Archaeology, HIstory, and the Origins of Rome Literary Tradition Livy himself was a little skeptical Romulus and Remus- Alba Longa- mythical city in Alban hills to the south of Rome King Numitor was deposed by brother Amulius- he killed the male kids of Numitor- made Rhea Silvia, Numitor's daughter, a vestal virgin Rhea became pregnant- got impregnated by Mars, by a hearth flame, etc- birthed 2 twins, Romulus and Remus Amulius ordered them to be killed- drowned in the Tiber river- saved by a she wolf- raised by a shepherd and his wife twins grow up to be shepherds- demigods- became leaders of a band of shepherd warriors/thieves- steal from robbers twins dragged into the city- Numitor recognizes they are more than just shepherds- the twins put Numitor back on the throne Romulus and Remus decide to found their own city where they were left to die- future rome Romulus wants to found city on Palatine hill, Remus wanted to found it on Aventine hill Remus mocked Romulus' city by jumping over city wall- Romulus killed his brother Rome is founded by fratricide- April 21, 753 bc
