5, 6, 7, 8, 10 Treatment of Schizophrenia Medication -most effective treatment: discovered by French surgeon -cocktail of drugs, including tranquilizer -antipsychotics (relatively safe), neuroleptics, major tranquilizers (same things) -efficacy -70% improve on drugs -25% improve a little -5% get worse -suggests a very effective drug (about the same rate as penicillin) -reduce sxs -shorten hospitalization -reduce rate of relapse -reduce posiive sxs (delusions, hallucinations, thought disorder) -don’t effect negative sxs (catatonia, flat affect, poverty of thought) DA Hypothesis of Schizophrenia -excess DA transmission in mesolimbic in SZ -too little in mesocortical (associated with negative sxs) -antipsychotics block DA receptors Medication -trypical -first-generation -atypical -second-generation -typical (first) -block DA -haldol, thorazine (thorazine shuffle—motor side effect), mellaril, prolixin -atypical (different class of drug) -block DA and other NTs (including serotonin) -clozaril, zyprexa, risperdal Medication – DA block -receptor blocked by chlorpromazine (essentially acts to fill up receptor, dopamine antagonist)
