9.12.11 Chapter 9: The Autonomic Nervous System (slide 1) -primitive nervous system -regulating responses to stress, fight or flight, etc. The CNS and the PNS (slide 3) *autonomic nervous system is not synonymous with the PNS* -The CNS: brain and spinal cord -The PNS: nerves and ganglia outside the CNS -nerves and ganglia -12 pairs of cranial nerves (exit brain) -from the midbrain, medulla -31 pairs of spinal nerves (exit spinal cord) -exit is an anatomical term, information will flow both ways -most nerves are “mixed”, comprised of both sensory and motor fibers The Autonomic Nervous System (slide 5) -motor and sensory information from both somatic and autonomic side - regulation of cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and glands -control of “involuntary” visceral organs and blood vessels -flow of blood - the autonomic (or visceral) motor system contrasts with the somatic motor system -efferent neurons: autonomic motor nerurons vs. somatic motor neurons - autonomic usually paired, somatic is single - central control: frontal cortex and subcortical structures (somatic) vs. hypothalamus, brain stem, spinal cord (autonomic) -hypothalamus communicates to other structures in brain - autonomic ganglion: excitatory connections - effector : what happens can vary (slide 6) - structure is similar -somatic motor reflex -autonomic motor reflex (sympathetic) -preganglionic neuron: synapse with second motor neuron/postganglionic neuron **Autonomic vs. Somatic Motor Systems (slide 7) -understand differences between somatic and autonomic motor systems Two Divisions of the ANS (slide 9) -sympathetic
