2 ETHICAL DILEMMAS To define ethical dilemmas, one could easily look up the individual definitions of both words. A common definition of ethics is to conform to a socially accepted standard or professional behavior. Simple enough, but the problem comes in when the question is presented as to what is a socially accepted standard? Across the globe, standards of what is socially accepted are different. More common is the definition of dilemma, if one is incapable of meeting his or her moral obligations, this is a dilemma. With that definition, raises the question as to what is a moral obligation? A moral obligation of us all is to treat people ethically, and with respect. This is why ethical dilemmas are also known as moral dilemmas. Ethics in the U.S. and across the globe is mainly about the right and wrong choices people make in terms of our conduct with regards to other people. Also a dilemma is defined as a problem where in there are two possible solutions, and neither are acceptable in a practical manner. At the Institute for Global Ethics, which is a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting ethical action on a global scale, you can read various dilemmas which are provided by the actual sources of said dilemma.
