Stephanie Pham May 13, 2009 IB Chemistry Hydrogen Production Lab Procedures: 1. The ring stand was assembled by attaching the buret clamp. 2. Using rubber gloves, 10 mL of 6 M HCl were poured into a Pyrex 10 mL graduated cylinder, then transferred into the eudiometer. 3. A strip of magnesium ribbon was cut, and then weighed. This process was repeated until its mass was recorded as 0.0238 g. 4. The magnesium ribbon was then rolled into a loose coil and tied on one end with a piece of thread. 5. The thread was wound around a black rubber stopper and tied tightly. 6. A 250 mL Pyrex beaker was filled with tap water. 7. The tap water was slowly poured into the eudiometer, filling it completely and layering the water over the HCl. 8. The magnesium coil was lowered into the eudiometer to a depth of about 5 cm. 9. The rubber stopper was inserted into the open end of the eudiometer, displacing water from the tube and ensuring that no air was left inside. 10. The 250 mL Pyrex beaker was once again filled with water to the brim.
