Thermodynamics Laboratory Stephanie Pham IB Chemistry SL 27 September 2009 Partners: Davis,Whiting PURPOSE: The purpose of this lab was to determine the relationship between the heats (enthalpy) of reaction for three related reactions using Hess’s Law. APPARATUS: Acculab Balance- Readability 0.001g Plastic weighing dishes 50 mL graduated cylinder Ring stand Styrofoam cup Thermometer Materials: NaOH (solid) H 0 0.25 M HCl 0.5 M HCl 0.5 M NaOH Safety: During the lab, safety goggles were worn to protect the eyes, and hands were washed after the lab was completed as a precaution. NaOH has the ability to cause chemical burns when not used carefully. Strong HCl has a corrosive effect on tissue. PROCEDURE Part 1a: The ring stand was assembled and a Styrofoam cup was secured. 100 mL of H 2 0 was measured using a 50 mL graduated cylinder and poured into the Styrofoam cup. The temperature of the water was taken using a glass thermometer and recorded into a data chart. 1 g of solid NaOH was attempted to be measured in a plastic weighing dish using the Acculab Balance. The NaOH was then reacted with the water. When the solid NaOH was completely dissolved, the temperature was recorded again. Part 1b: The graduated cylinder and thermometer was rinsed with distilled water. 100 mL of 0.25 M HCl was measured using a 50 mL graduated cylinder
