GEO4/6938: The geography of vector-borne diseases Dr Andy Tatem Fall 2011 Classroom location: 3006 Turlington Hall Meeting times: This course meets Tuesday periods 7-9 (rm 3006) (2pm- 4.55pm) during the Fall semester 2011. Prerequisites: None Course description: Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) are those transmitted between humans or animals via an intermediate host, for instance a mosquito. There exist a huge number of human and animal VBDs, from those causing significant morbidity and mortality today, such as malaria and dengue, to others, such as West Nile Virus and Chikungunya that have recently caused headlines through emergence in new areas. This course aims to provide an introduction to the spatial epidemiology of VBDs and modern methods for monitoring, mapping and modeling them. We will discuss the geography of VBDs, the mechanisms that cause them and how changes in land use, land cover, climate, transport and lifestyle are resulting in rapid changes to their epidemiology. An overview of VBDs will be presented, including the mechanisms of transmission, their distributions, history and effects on human and animal populations. General topics covered will include the predictive mapping of mosquito distributions, spatial analysis of disease transmission levels, quantifying populations at risk of VBDs, simple models of disease transmission and quantification of the risk of global VBD movements. Though a range of VBDs will be examined, there will be a focus on malaria throughout, which remains the most deadly VBD, killing around 1-3 million children a year one every 30 seconds.
