Organization – a group of people who coordinate activities to achieve individual and collective goals 2. Weber’s Theory of Bureaucracy What are the major features of a bureaucracy? What is the role and nature of communication in a bureaucracy? Of what concern is the individual? no concern, not taken into consideration What are outcomes of extreme bureaucracies? Lower productivity, conflict between management and workers, and less employee loyalty 2. What were the Hawthorne Effect Studies? What were the results, consequences and impact of the theory? These people that came into a factory that were studying the effects of lighting on employee productivity. They found that the lighting didn’t matter. This is called the Hawthorne effect because the employee productivity went up because they felt special from the attention of the researchers. Attention improved attitude. Showed people that there is relationship between communication and human relations to people’s productivity and attitudes. 3. McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y. What are the characteristics of the two theories? Theory X states that humans do not enjoy work and that they are only doing it for the money. Workers have to be told what to do. Theory y states that work is natural and humans enjoy work. Workers don’t like being told what to do, they want to be able to make decisions and be creative, and organization should try to connect their goals to the workers’ achievement and self-actualization. 5. Deal and Kennedy’s Theory of Organizational Culture What are the elements of organizational culture? What are the two factors upon which organizational culture is based? What are the characteristics of the four types of organizational cultures? Organizational culture says that a company becomes high performing when they have a high culture. cultural network. Values are basically um the beliefs of the company. Heroes are the employees, people involved in the organization, that represent values and personify the values. Rights and rituals are public performances showing values. Cultural network is informal communication, like gossip and jokes.
