Yet few of these members know about organizational communication What is an Organization? A group of people who coordinate activities to achieve individual and collective goals What is Organizational Communication? Communication that has 3 functions: Relationship o Communication that socializes organizational members and integrates them into their work environment Organizing o Communication that guides, directs, and controls organizational activity Change o Communication that enables organizational members to analyze, problem solve, adapt, and innovate Theory of Bureaucracy – Weber (not in text) Fundamental theory of organizations Major Features Focus on power and authority Based on: o Rules o Spheres of Competence/Division of Labor o Hierarchy Communication in Classical Bureaucracies Not stressed Concern for the Individual in Classical Bureaucracies
