The Architecture of the City by Aldo Rossi 2 Introduction The Les Espaces d’Abraxas building in Noisy-Le-Grand, Paris, France is one of the household’s name by the great architect Ricardo Bofill. The building is developed in the prefabricated classical vocabulary that became Bofill’s trademark. The structure is organized into three principal parts and has 591 dwellings. In many pieces of literature, the city in urban theories has been the main focus; these scholars try to understand the city and the appropriate design. Aldo Rossi is one of the theorists concerned with such discipline. In this essay, I will critique this building using the text, “The Architecture of the City”, by Aldo Rossi. Other books will be drawn in for supplementary or comparison explanation. The essay will look at the interconnectedness across this building and the books. The article seeks to answer the question, in what ways can “The Architecture of the City” text and all the ideas contained in it be used in the interpretation of the architect, including; the cultural context and the intentions of the building, “Les Espaces d’AbraHousing at Noisy-Le-Grand, France by Ricardo Bofill. The Architecture of the City by Aldo Rossi 3 This paper will use the main ideas summarized by Aldo Rossi in the “Architecture of the City” to critique the building “Les Espaces d’AbraHousing at Noisy-Le-Grand, France by Ricardo Bofill. I will elaborate on the discussion by emphasizing the theoretical assumptions that have been pointed out in the text. First, we will look at Aldo Rossi’s main theories that have been brought out in the book, “The Architecture of the City” then use these concepts and ideas to critique the building. Aldo Rossi’s ideology I. Urban Artefact and the architecture of the city theory The book by Aldo Rossi expresses Rossi’s uncertainty with the modernism ideology; Rossi indicates some particular aspects of failure in modern architecture. In the book, Rossi simply wants “City” not to be misunderstood as being different from architecture. To understand City as architecture implies that the significance of architecture as a discipline that has an autonomy that is self-determining has to be recognized. To Rossi architecture does not mean the sum of the different architectures or the visible image of the city; it instead implies that architecture should not be separated from life and society. Great architectures, according to Rossi, are created with the intention of anaesthetic and a better environment of life.
