Yet few of these members know about organizational communication What is an Organization? A group of people who coordinate activities to achieve individual and collective goals What is Organizational Communication? Communication that has 3 functions: 1. Relationship Communication that socializes organizational members and integrates them into their work environment 2. Organizing Communication that guides, directs, and controls organizational activity 3. Change Communication that enables organizational members to analyze, problem solve, adapt, and innovate Theory of Bureaucracy – Weber (not in text) Foundational theory of organizations Major Features Focus on power and authority Based on: Rules Spheres of Competence/Division of Labor Hierarchy Most efficient pattern for large, complex organizations Communication in Classical Bureaucracies Not stressed Basically consists of superiors giving orders to subordinates Concern for the Individual in Classical Bureaucracies Individual: Cog in a machine Individual feelings, goals, worries, self-esteem, not treated as important factors Leave your worries at home Some Outcomes of Extreme Bureaucracies Lower productivity Less employee loyalty Conflict between management and workers Hawthorne Effect Studies – Roethlisberer Marked the beginning of a recognition of the importance of Human Relations in organizations Studies were conducted at the Hawthorne Electric Plant from 1925 to 1932 Researchers wanted to determine optimum level of lighting for maximum productivity Productivity increased whether lighting was increased or decreased What happened during the studies? Researchers asked workers to express their views on a wide variety of work-related issues, including complaints Being allowed to express their views improved workers’ attitudes toward the company and their work The company tried to respond to complaints, which also improved attitudes Impact on Organizational Theory Began to realize the importance of communication and human relations to productivity and attitudes Theory X, Theory Y – McGregor (not in text) Managers make assumptions about people and how they feel about work These assumptions affect the way managers treat their workers Theory X Workers don’t enjoy work They only work because they need money Workers need to be directed, controlled, or even threatened in order to get them to be productive Theory Y Work is natural to people Workers are self-directed, want to be creative and given responsibility to make decisions Workers will be connected to the organization if the organization connects its goals to...
