Michele Chan 9/17/10 Post Lab Questions 1.) Out of the available options, solvent Z is best for isolating solid A from the heterogeneous mixture. Unknown A will dissolve at high temperatures into solvent Z whereas Unknown B will not. Hot filtration of Solvent Z with unknown A will leave behind Unknown B. Therefore Recrystalization will isolate unknown A from solvent Z. Neither solvent X or Y can be used to isolate unknown A from B. Solvent X does not work because the solubilities for both the unknowns do not have a significant change with temperature. Therefore Unknown A would not be able to recrystalize if dissolved in Solvent X. Solvent Y, on the other hand won’t work because the solubilities for both A and B change when the temperature is changed therefore both dissolve equally when heated, so they will both precipitate out. 2.) O-Nitrobenzoic acid is the unknown solid. The melting point range can only be depressed and broadened. Benzoic acid, Benzamide and cinnamic acid are not possible candidates
