Running Head: EFFECTIVENESS OF PULLING AN ALL NIGHTER The Effectiveness of Pulling an All Nighter for Sleep Deprived and Non Sleep Deprived University Students Michele Chan University of Georgia, Undergraduate student Abstract This study evaluated the effect of 48 hour sleep deprivation on sleep deprived and non sleep deprived college students. It is a between subject, factorial experiment. The participants were tested on their executive functioning and memory performance. The participants were 60 aged 19-24 college students from the University of Georgia. The students were in similar study programs and all had never participated in previous psychophysiological studies and in good health. They were required to take part in a pretest and post test for executive functioning. The results indicated that chronically sleep deprived students could perform well with executive functioning and memory performance after 48 hour sleep deprivation, whereas non sleep deprived students performed badly after 48 hour sleep deprivation with executive functioning and memory recall.

The Effectiveness of Pulling an All Nighter for Sleep Deprived and Non Sleep Deprived University Students Introduction: For the average college aged adult, sleep deprivation is a common dilemma. In order to satisfy the demands of rigorous course work, students will deprive themselves of a healthy amount of sleep, which has been calculated to be 8 to 9 hours. The average college student receives around 6 hours of sleep (Tsui, Y., & Wing, Y. 2009). Many students also participate in the occasional all nighter, which is an entire night of no sleep, usually resulting in up to 48 hours without sleep (Thacher, P. 2008). This constant sleep deprivation can have a negative effect on the students resulting in an even lower grade than they would have obtained under normal sleep patterns. Previous studies have analyzed the effect of sleep deprivation on executive control functions and they noticed a significant impairment in controls (Jian-Lin, Q., Yong-Cong, S., Danmin, M., Ming, F., Guo-Hua, B., & Zheng, Y. 2010). Studies that focus on a single night sleep deprivation were able to conclude that a sleep restricting lifestyle can lead to resistance from the negative effects of sleep deprivation (Pace-Schott, E., Hutcherson, C., Bemporad, B., Morgan, A., Kumar, A., Hobson, J., et al. 2009). The study demonstrated that executive function was impaired as evident by the results in each of the test used to assess executive functioning like the fluency test, Baddley logical test and Stroop word color test and sentence completion.

The conclusions indicated that there is strong evidence that point to sleep deprivation as being the cause for executive functioning impairment. The main purpose of the all nighter is essential to perform well on a test given the next
