Michele Chan Chem 2211L Adna Muliawan Results Mass of Nutmeg: 4.503g Volume of Methylene Chloride: 45ml Weight of water glass 13.529g Weight of water glass and trimyristin: 13.970g Mass of trimyrisin recovered: 0.441g Melting point range for recovered Trimyristin: 49-50 Celcisus Percent recovery: 0.441 / (4.503x20%) X 100 = 49% recovery Discussion: We calculated the percent recovery for the extraction of Trimyristin to be 49% and we took into consideration that the sample of nutmeg we obtained would have around 20- 25 % of Trimyristin, with that in mind we used 20% of the Nutmeg mass as a reference to figure out the percent recovery of Trimyristin. We thought the percent of recovery was higher than we expected. However, after extraction and vacuum suction of the recovered trimyristin, we noticed that there were still fragments of boiling chips left in the sample as the sample was a pure white powder and the boiling chips appeared as a yellowish chunk of solid.
