Michele Chan 10/21/2010 Adna Muliawan Results Mass of Pd/C: 0.053g Mass of olive oil: 0.404g Cyclohexene: 1ml Mass of recovered tristearin: 0.284g Calculations (0.404g)x (1mol of olive oil/884g olive oil) x( 2mol tristearin/2mol triolein) x( 890g tristearin/ 1 mol tristearin) = 0.407g (1ml of cyclohexene) X ( 0.8111g cyclohexene/ 1ml cyclohexene) x (1mol cyclohexene/ 82g cyclohexene) x (2mol tristearin/ 3 mol cyclohexene) x ( 890g tristearin/ 1 mol tristearin) = 5.87g Limiting reactant is the olive oil of triolein, so the theorectical yield is 0.407g Percent yield = ( 0.284g/0.407g) x 100 = 69.8 % Discussion With this experiment, we were not successful as the experiment failed to hydrogenate, we ended up with a gel-like substance when we placed the final product into an icebath, it did not solidify. Some of it did, which lead us to believe it was partially hydrogenated. So, there were still partially unhydrogenated molecules in the product. Being that it did not solidify, we did not get the melting point because we can’t melt what did not solidify. The reflux and filtration went
