Tuesday March 16, 2010 Market Revolution transforms the north in a number of ways. It breaks down older structure social structure like the hierarchy family, as kids can move out and get jobs. It puts the U.S on the road to civil war because of the difference of the revolution on the north and south. The south goes through an economic transformation because they rely on cotton which was not big in the 18 th century. Within 3 years, the amount of growing cotton has increased by millions and continues to increase. One reason why it increases is that the world population is rising mostly in Europe. 1750- 750 million to 1950 – 2485. The united states south cotton is used to cloth them. The technologies had increased which made cotton production easier, previously people wear homespun. In 1765, the spinning jenny is invented; it turns fibers into yarn, much faster rate than before. In the past only wealthy could wear cotton but now it can be massed produced. It effects the north because the change contributed to the market revolution, because cotton mills and textiles factories opened in Rhode Island in the 1790’s. Inside a mill, women would spin fibers into thread. Most of the laborers in the factories are women who are not yet married, called Waltham system. The entire processes are took place in the single factory with women laborers. This expanded throughout the northeast with Massachusetts being the center. By 1830, 16000 women were employed in these factories. They would work for about 3 years, 14 hours days, 6 days a week and when they were done, they got married. They had to abide by strict rules like going to church and live in dormitories. Women wanted these jobs. They were oppressive places but they offered women opportunities. The factorys were massive. There is a huge increase in the number of spinning mills in the U.S. Family is no longer the basic economic structure but individuals. In the south, the exact happened, the expansion of slavery occurred. Founding father believed that slavery would die out. There were no crops that needed their work, ground could no longer cultivate tobacco and finding a cash crop is difficult. In 1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton Gin which allowed for the sufficient processing of green seed cotton. With black seed cotton it is easy to separate the fibers from seed but it only survives in coastal regions. Most areas could only grow green seed cotton but it was very difficult to separate out the seeds. To get 1 lb of cotton it took 10 hours to process it by hand. Suddenly hundreds of acres in the south can be used to grow cotton. This leads to a massive
