2. Systems, Interactions, Properties, States, Processes System – Bounded region of interest defined by us for our convenience. Specification of the boundary is crucial and must be consistent throughout a process. Choose system boundaries according to: 1) Knowledge about the system such as convenient locations where parameter values are known. 2) Objectives of the analysis Environment -- Everything outside the system. Basic types of systems Closed - No mass crosses the system boundary. Energy and entropy can, by Work and Heat Interactions Open (Control Volume) – Mass can cross the boundary, along with energy and entropy via a Mass Interaction. Isolated – No interactions with the environment. However system may spontaneously relax to Stable Equilibrium.
