In 1-dimensional conduction with steady conditions constant thermal conductivity k no internal energy addition/removal by means other than conduction the temperature gradient is always linear . If a non-linear gradient is observed in a one- dimensional conduction situation either conditions are unsteady, k varies with location, or energy is being added/removed by other means. The inside of a plane wall shows the temperature profile on the figure at right. a) If the non-linearity is due to unsteadiness, which parts of the wall are increasing in energy? Which parts are de- creasing in energy?
