November 9, 2007 Lecture 27 – Polish Current Events The Election (October 21) - Sejm (460 seats) o Civic Platform: 209 seats o Law and Justice: 166 seats o Left and Democrats: 53 seats o Polish Peasants’ Party (PSL): 31 seats - Government coalition o Civic Platform and PSL o 240 deputies (231 = majority) o PSL will receive three ministries (economy, agriculture, and labor or environment - Senate (100 seats) o Civic Platform: 60 seats o Law and Justice: 39 seats What is going to be different? - Summary of previous government (Neal Ascherson, Open Democracy): o A “continental embarrassment” o “...with bigoted and oppressive domestic policies, including anti-gay rhetoric and ruthless, witch hunting treatment of opponents o Its foreign policy was farcical in its crude nationalism and alienated its neighbors and the EU o Hence, vast relief abroad and at home after Relations with EU - Tusk: “We are the most pro-European party in Poland” - Poland’s relations with its European partners will see a return to “the greatest trust
