Unformatted text preview: Ruiz Josecarlos ANTONIO RUIZ Diaz ENGL 2342 Carolina Ruiz March 3, 2011 Essay # 1 Ever since unmemorable times the human heart and its endeavors for greatness, to succeed, to accomplished something greater that oneself has been pressed into the mind, the soul, and the whole by the works of art and literature. Stories of struggle, love and passion, victory and defeat, pain and joy had been, for as long as this world can remember, have always invaded man to contagiously grind the mind and create a sense of empathy and strive within the soul. Literature, readings and accounts written by others, for others, can only but sharpen the senses of the reader in a way that aids to dissipate the feelings of helplessness that overrun the being into giving up. These accounts too, help to attempt greatness, which inflates the chest, and pushes into the pursuit of something worth fighting for. Literature is not only a testimony of life, but also a stepping stone for life itself. Works by authors like Felipe Alfau, Isabel Allende, and Rodolfo Corky Gonzales prove, how, in a world overcooked inside a melting pot, identity and the obstacles, such as despair and struggle that may come along, help, through literature in the quest for selfness. In the extract from Locos: A Comedy of Gestures Identity by Felipe Alfau, the author attempts to fulfill a promise to my poor friend (Alfau 507), this is how the story starts, Fulano is portrayed as an individual searching for fame, to be noticed, and think of by others. Fulanos character is so desperate that in a last attempt to obtained fame, and start from scratch, he fakes his own death, yet he encounters that getting rid of the identity he had in order to get a new turns out to go wrong, when someone else uses Fulanos name and becomes important. The reader can quickly gather information that makes the existence of Fulano doubtful, It seems that Fulanos Ruiz personality, if we are to grant him a personality (Alfau 507), the author provides with little information regarding his own friends character, perhaps unimportant, ordinary; however this causes confusion to the reader, for, as compared to the opening sentence which clearly states that the story is for Fulano, the author isnt really honoring his promise. Furthermore, the author keeps ignoring to mention important information regarding Fulano, His name was unimportant, his face and figure were unimportant, his attire was unimportant and his whole life was unimportant (Alfau 507), it would appear that the most significant attribute to the authors friend and main character of the story is his insignificance....
