Josecarlos Ruiz TTh 1:00PM Fall 2009 Bacteria 47 - Enterococcus faecalis Tuesday November 3th, 2009 A sample with number 47 of unknown bacteria was obtained and a gram test was performed in order to determine if the unknown bacteria had a outer cell membrane or not. The bacteria was determined to be gram positive from the purple color of the bacteria, which had circular shapes bound together. After indentifying that the unknown was a gram positive, the following step was to determine whether the bacteria was positive or negative for the catalasee test. This test determines if a bacteria, when exposed to Hydrogen Peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), produces an enzyme capable of protecting itself from the potential damage that the H 2 O 2 could cause. A sample of the bacteria was obtained and put on a slide and H 2 O 2 was added, with no visible reaction (no bubbles present). It was determined that bacteria 47 was negative for catalase test. Base on the results of the gram stain and catalase test, it was determined that bacteria 47 had to be one of the following: Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus bovis, or Enterococcus faecali. Three different media were innoculated in order to compare the results to determine exactly what kind of bacteria number 47 might be. The media used were: - A blood agar with a Bacitracin (antibiotic) disk. The streaking technique used was streaking for isolation and the antibiotic disk was place on the area of the agar with the heaviest streaking (on the first quadrant). - Bile Esculin agar. The streaking technique used was streaking for isolation.
