Bio Lecture 5 (9/14/11) COOH is carboxylic acid (carboxyl group) C=O and C-OH Thio means it contains sulfur prefix Di would mean 2 Suffix “ol” means its an alcohol Alcohols are soluble in water o Likes dissolve Likes Reducing agents donate electrons-doesn’t mean it is negatively charged though DNA (transcription goes to) mRNA (translation goes to) Protein DNA also replicates to make more DNA When DNA goes to RNA it is really just sending information and copies of information to RNA to make proteins There are 4 major macromolecules o Carbohydrates- Sugars and polymers o Lipids- fats oils etc o Proteins o Nucleic Acids- DNA and RNA and individual nucleotides Polymers are chains of similar and sometimes identical small organic molecules.
