Unformatted text preview: Blood Supply of CNS Blood Supply of CNS CNS requires a constant flow of blood, oxygen & metabolized glucose Blood Supply of CNS Interruption of blood supply results in brain damage/irreversible injury in 4-6 mins Blood Supply of CNS Oxygen deprivation has greater effect on cerebral cortex than it does on the brain stem & spinal cord Arterial Supply of CNS Internal carotid, Vertebral and Basilar arteries supply blood to the CNS Arterial Supply of CNS Internal carotid, Vertebral and Basilar arteries supply blood to the CNS Circle of Willis Cervical Vertebrae Transverse foramen that protects the vertebral artery as it passes through it Blood Supply of CNS Vertebral arteries supply the spinal cord, the brain stem and the cerebellum Blood Supply of CNS Internal carotid arteries branch from each side of the neck Blood Supply of CNS Internal carotid arteries branch from each side of the neck COMMON CAROTID ARTERY Blood Supply of CNS Internal carotid arteries branch from each side of the neck INTERNAL CAROTID ARTERY Blood Supply of CNS Internal carotid arteries branch from each side of the neck EXTERNAL CAROTID ARTERY Blood Supply of CNS Vertebral arteries branch from the left & right subclavian Common Carotid artery Left Common carotid artery arises directly from the arch of the aorta Common Carotid artery Right Common Carotid Artery arises from the brachiocephalic trunk The brachiocephalic trunk is the branch of the aorta Vertebral Arteries Are branches of the R & L subclavian Circle of Willis Located on the ventral surface of the brain Arteries form a circle This allows the flow of blood in either direction in case of blockage Circle of Willis Formed by 4 arteries: 1. Two internal carotids on either side 2. Anterior communicating artery 3. Posterior communicating artery 4. Posterior Cerebral artery Internal Carotid Artery Divides into: 1. Anterior & 2. Middle Cerebral arteries Homunculus Internal Carotid Artery Anterior Cerebral branch supplies the: 1. Medial surface of the Frontal & Parietal lobe 2. A strip on the superior surface of each hemisphere Internal Carotid Artery Anterior cerebral artery is connected to its name sake through the anterior communicating artery Occlusion results in loss of strength & sensations in the lower body. Internal Carotid Artery Middle Cerebral branch supplies the Lateral & under surfaces of the temporal & frontal lobes The Little Latin Guy Anterior Cerebral Artery Middle Cerebral Artery Posterior Cerebral Artery Homunculus Basilar artery Formed by the L & R Vertebral arteries Location: Junction of Pons & M.O Basilar artery...
