LEGAL ASPECTS OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT HM 120 HM 120.01 Fall Semester 2010 Wednesday, 19:00 – 21:45 Room: BUS 104 SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY Hospitality Management Department Instructors: Jordan Lavinsky, Esq. and John Crossfield, Esq. Office Hours: After Class Text: Hotel, Restaurant, and Travel Law, A Preventative Approach , Cournoyer, Marshall and Morris, seventh edition. I. This course will provide a description of the law relating to management in the hospitality industry. We will explore the legal relationship of the hotel/restaurant/recreation facility to its guests, to travel agents, the liability for guest protection, the liability for losses of guest property, and the hospitality industry’s legal relationships with its employees. Specific topics to be covered will include: discrimination laws affecting accommodation and employment, liability from the sale of food and alcohol, wage regulations, licensing, trademark, antitrust, and copyright issues affecting the hospitality industry. The emphasis will be on the prevention of legal problems before they occur. Upon the completion of the course, the successful student will have the practical knowledge with which to recognize a legal problem in the hospitality industry and be able to identify situations that call for professional help before a legal matter escalates. II. COURSE SYLLABUS AND ASSIGNMENTS Please complete the reading assignments for the subject before the lecture on the particular topic. Completing the reading before class will enable you to understand the lecture better and participate with classroom discussions. Your classroom participation will be an important learning tool.
