First PHYSICAL things, then other weights/burdens and fear (spiritual) o P. 237 “They carried all they could bear…” Weight of MEMORY Told/seen through Lieutenant Cross; knows Martha doesn’t love him they way he loves her, but he still fantasizes, and later gives up carrying her memory after Lavender dies Women – “No More Miss America” o Women’s Movement o o Betty Freidman surveyed her college classmates: discontent & called it Feminine Mystique o Feminine action against the beauty pageant o Rhetoric of document: values of women (ideal/slim/white – all EXTERNAL) People threw out feminine objects: bras, girdles Threw out also male evaluation/binding control Wanted to be arrested by female police officers/talked to by female
