5/21/10 (1989 Key Events) Japanese: people were known to throw rocks at them because U.S. not happy that the Japanese were getting ahead of them economically I. 1970’s 1973 oil embargo o Problems for unions o Salaries coming down for more cost effective o Japan is the bad enemy people threw stones at your Japanese car that was freaking successful 1973 80 economic crisis o INFLATION o Bankrupt cities: social services Iran hostage crisis Carter’s presidency II. 1980’s Reagan’s campaign/election o Wanted to restore U.S.’s greatness: “A shining city on a hill” o Opportunities to pull immigration in, economies/immigration don’t always sync; contradictory in the 80’s o “Star Wars” in space with Soviet Union o Raise confrontation of the Cold War o Economy: low control. Trickle down effect : the more $ the higher class makes, the more $ will trickle down to the poor o Cut spending on social programs o Reagan likes private sector Strong anti-feminist sentiment among women who were then more conservative Cultural wars Jobs that people don’t have anymore
