WS 301 Dr. Shea Women in American Society Virginia Sapiro Chapter One Outline An Introduction to Women’s Studies 1) Representing Women a) Androcentrism - literal meaning “centered on men”, societal tendency to view men as the central actors in human society. Men are the norm women are compared to. b) Egocentrism - tendency of individuals to see themselves as the center of the world c) Ethnocentrism - people view there own culture as the norm d) Anthropocentrism - view humans as the most significant entity in the universe e) Traditionally women are defined as revolving around/ supporting men f) Representation of women i) Healthy adult [women vs. males] ii) Supreme court representation of juries (1) Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas argued men could represent women therefore there was no to have women in juries (2) Argument: if interchangeable then why not have all women 2) Knowledge and the Representation of Women a) 4 factors contributed to ignorance i) Aspects of women’s lives are ignored because they are unimportant when compared to what males do
