Ch. 2 – Solar Energy to Earth and the Seasons  20:00 Solar System Nebula - cloud of dust and gas Gravity - attracting force exerted by mass of an object on other objects; condensed the nebula  Formed 4.6 billion years ago  Earth’s Orbit Elliptical - closed oval path  Perihelion - closest position of the Earth to Sun during N. Hemisphere winter Aphelion - farthest position of Earth to Sun during N. Hemisphere summer  Fusion - hydrogen atoms forced together to form energy  Solar wind - electrically charged particles coming from Sun’s surface to Earth’s atmosphere  Sunspots - magnetic storms on surface of Sun  Magnetosophere - magnetic field surrounding Earth that deflects solar wind towards Earth’s  poles  Aurora - folded sheets of lights; aurora borealis (northern lights) and aurora australis (southern  lights) Solar Radiation  Electromagnetic spectrum - made up of waves of light measured in wavelengths
