TEST #2 GEOGRAPHY 2050 CH: 4 Energy Balances and Budgets Radiation is only one mechanism for transferring energy. Energy Budget – inputs of energy into the object o Inputs – outputs = +/- change in storage o A negative budget = negative change in storage/decrease in temperature o Key component: Radiation! o (Net radiation) Netrad = S - L – S + L We can define a radiation energy budget The change in storage is going to be the net radiation The inputs of radiation: incoming shortwave (solar energy); all objects are going to reflect some of this - outgoing shortwave energy (reflected short wave energy) Another potential: incoming longwave radiation (people, earths surface are all giving off longwave energy – incoming) – longwave output is the longwave given off Daily (Diurnal) Radiation Pattern : Top of the atmosphere o Net Radiation – energy budget and over time net radiation is going to be zero; the Earth is continuously heating up and cooling off, so over time there is an equal amount of inputs and outputs. o Daily (diurnall) Radiation Budget 4 components: incoming/outgoing shortwave/longwave Net Radiation is positive during the day time Outgoing SW is a reflection of the incoming SW Incoming LW is relatively constant; controlled by most of the atmosphere above us has constant temperatures. Outgoing LW is variable; continuously giving off energy; as the ground heats up during the day, it is giving off more and more energy o NETRAD = SW – SW = LW - LW SW-longer difference LW-smaller difference

Surface Energy Balance: H - Sensible heat conduction, convection; You can detect it. This is heat that is transferred in the form of usually convection, but can be conduction too. The warm ground surface bumping into cold air molecules above it. - Conduction : molecule-to-molecule transfer; as you increase the temperature/kinetic energy of molecules, the molecules will transfer energy to the other molecules - Conduction is the sensible heat flux (transfer of movement) of energy. - Sensible heat transfers result from conduction and convection. - Convection : Energy transferred by movement LE - Latent Heat of evaporation energy being transferred as evaporation; In order for water to evaporate, a water molecule has to break the chemical bonds that are holding it to adjacent water molecules and this requires a tremendous amount of energy. The water molecules get this energy from absorbing it from surrounding surfaces. They carry this energy with them and this stored energy is the latent heat, which essentially means it is hidden. Water molecules can be taken away from the surface.
