Chapter 2: ETHNICITY & RACE LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF EDUCATION GUIDING QUESTIONS What factors contribute to racial and ethnic conflict in some schools? What racial groups are most likely to see themselves in the school curriculum? How can a classroom reflect the diversity of its students so they feel valued and respected? Groups that sit or hang together, cliques, and what causes that to happen in schools, and are the ppl involved even aware that these exist. EX. Jena 6 incident -- Make all students feel welcomed. TERMS OF IMPORTANCE Emigrate: Leave ones’ native country to relocate to another country. Racism : Belief that one race is superior to others. Nativism : Policy favoring assimilated ethnic groups in a country over immigrants. Nationalism : Identity and membership based on a common language and culture in a nation that includes loyalty and devotion to the nation. Endogamy : Marriage within the same cultural group. Multiethnic Curriculum : Reflect accurate and positive information about the history, experiences, contributions and perspectives of ethnic groups that comprise the U.S. population. Racism is now not how we looked at it historically. There is a new phenomenon called inter-race- racism, which is racism within a group. Ex. When people within a group look down on others because of how they live or look. Socio- economic status and people living in trailor parks, who has money and where do they live. Nativism : we in America accept, are more comfortable with, and like the immigrants that come a immediately assimilate to our lifestyle, because we are comfortable with them. We want to feel like they’re apart of us and feel more comfortable. Endogamy
