Evolutionary Psychology Test 2 review Pg73 Folk Biology – the intuition that living things come in discrete packets that correspond to distinct species and that each distinct species has an internal “essence” that produces its growth, bodily functions, external form and special powers. -core belief: different members of the same species share hidden causal essences. Ex. Lions have an internal essence that produces canine teeth and specialized claws that can kill you Pg74 Food preferences – infants get calories from mothers milk, which prevents from consuming lethal toxins until they can get their own food. Humans have preference for sweet food because of rich calories. Infants prefer sweet liquids. Humans dislike bitter and sour foods, which tend to contain toxins. We respond to deficits in water, calories and salt. Neophobia is an adaptation defined as a strong aversion to new foods. Humans typically coaxed to trying new food indicating a social element. Pg75 Disgust: The disease-Avoidance hypothesis Disgust- adaptation that serves as a defense against microbial attack, protecting people form the risk of disease. Ex. Revulsion and nausea Thus: 1. Disgust should be evoked by disease carrying substances 2. Should be universal across cultures Both are true…ex: rotting flesh, dirty food, leftovers, moldy food. Facial expressions are universal even in blind. Women are more sensitive to disgust than men, because of need to protect children. People with poor hygiene also elicit disgust. Summary of disgust: an emotion that evolved to avoid predictable classes of disease conduits that jeopardize survival. Pg 77 Sickness in pregnant women: Embryo protection hypothesis 75%-89% of women report nauseous reaction to particular foods. Pregnancy sickness is an adaptation that prevents mothers from consuming and absorbing teratogens, which are toxins that might be harmful to the developing baby. Things that caused this reaction were foods that contain carcinogens, as well as smelling spoiled food. Profet’s hypothesis is that it is an adaptation to prevent the ingestion of teratogens. This often occurs during the first trimester, when the fetus is most vulnerable to toxins due to organ development and it decreases between weeks 8 and 14. Women who do not experience morning sickness are 3 times as likely to have spontaneous abortion Pg 78 Raw food vs Cooking
