Handout for CHAPTER 29– Earth’s diverse ecosystem Quick reminder of where the biosphere falls out in our levels of organization Organism Population Community Ecosystems Biosphere What is the biosphere? All the terrestrial ecosystems on the planet How they interact with each other Ecosystems and biomes Around the planet, regions with similar patterns of vegetation occure that create unique ecosystems -Biomes Generally names after the dominant type of vegitation found there -9 recognized biomes (plus ice) What causes the development of biomes at certain places on the planet? Why do we see the same biome occure on multiple continents- usually at the same latitude? Around the planet, regions with similar patterns of vegetation The ecosystem that form a biome care determined by local climatic conditions Esp. temp ranges and precipitation But also by the amount of sunlight avaliable. 1
