Eli Somers 113051008 Mrs. McGill English 101 14 September 2011 The phrase political corruption can be defined as “the use of legislated powers by government officials for illegitimate private gain.” (Wikipedia) All over the world men have found great amounts of power and succumbed to the temptation to take advantage of this power. They control the system through bribery, intimidation, extortion, buying votes and destabilizing economies for their own gain. The eastern european country of Ukraine has been ranked in the top 50 most corrupt countries of the world ever since it broke free of the communist soviet union. (Guardian) This country is full of public scandals, but also many more cases of bribery. Even though the high-up people in the government could easily benefiet from their positin there are a few that are mature enough to When Ukraine gained it’s independence a lot of officials knew they were going to be taken out of office and they wanted to get the most out of their power while they still could. This little concept started the main corruption problem that has become such a wide-spread phenomenon. After communism had left, people had many aspects of western culture all of a sudden legal and available to them. The western half of Ukraine has taken on a more artistic and free-thinking movement, while the eastern half has still kept a pro-russian and pro-communism outlook on the government. Since this
